About Tri-County Dental Hygienists Society | Inland Empire

Mission

To improve the public’s total health, to advance the art and science of dental hygiene by increasing the awareness of the cost effective benefits of prevention and ensuring access to quality oral health care; promoting the highest standards of dental hygiene education, licensure, practice and research; and promoting the interests of dental hygienists.

Our Purpose

This component exists for the Dental Hygienists’ to share common interests, activities, education and institutions in fellowship with their professional colleagues.

    Our mutual goals include:
  1. To represent the profession of dental hygiene
  2. To provide optimal oral health care to the public
  3. To improve the quality of the work life for the Dental Hygienist

Any dental hygienist who holds a certificate or degree in dental hygiene granted pursuant to a dental hygiene program which has a minimum of two academic years of curriculum provided in a college or institution of higher education the program of which is recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or an appropriate national voluntary agency, or who is licensed to practice dental hygiene in the United States under the provision of a “grandfather clause”; who is licensed to practice in any state . . .

Dental instrument sterilization has always been a priority for dental practices, but the pandemic further highlighted the need to protect patients and staff from disease and infection. Instrument sterilizers play a critical role in maintaining infection prevention, which means they must always be in good working order.

Per CDC guidelines, biological monitoring or spore testing should be conducted and recorded at a minimum of once per week to ensure that sterilization equipment is performing as needed. In addition, spore testing results should be kept for as long as each individual state requires. In most states, that timeframe is three years.

How to Reduce Aerosols While Providing Optimal Patient Care Using Ultrasonic Instruments

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, guidelines regarding the generation of aerosols in dental practices are constantly evolving.

Current CDC guidance recommends using high volume evacuation, four-handed dentistry, and dental dams to reduce droplets and splatter when aerosol generating procedures are necessary, while also recognizing that use of hand instrumentation should be prioritized to minimize aerosols. Reducing the risk of disease transmission has traditionally been top-of-mind for dental health care personnel, and while dental dams are not an option for hygiene procedures and most hygienists do not work with a chairside assistant, there are several ways to reduce aerosol production during ultrasonic scaling. Techniques include the use of high-volume evacuation (HVE), adhering to recommended tip power levels, reducing water spray, and making sure your tips are in optimal condition.
